not that F1 isn’t already a game of favorites, but isn’t testing the tires on only 3 manufacturers a little unfair?

Not if every team gets the data as required.

Not at all, three different engines, three different chassis and three wildly different aerodynamic strategies. The rest of the teams get all of the data and don’t have to pay for the extra running costs of the cars.

Data still doesn’t replace real world testing. It helps but it is still an advantage to the teams testing.

Look at the rear wing on that thing! 2017 is going to be great.

How? Apart from driver impressions (it has more grip - duh), what can they get out of it if the data’s open? These aren’t open tests. They’re pretty tightly controlled by pirelli.

But really, fuck Scuderia Ferrari these days.
I mean, Ferrari the automaker is cool, but the Scuderia? Get me a ticket to their next race because I WANNA PADDLE THEIR ASSES SILLY FOR BEING INCOMPETENT TOOLS!!!

I hope so. F1 has nowhere to go but up.

Adjusting the suspension to the driver’s liking relative to the grip is a start.
Don’t get me wrong, shaker rigs and telemetry are a big help, but they can’t replace actually being out on the track.
Also, since F1 cars are bespoke among the manufacturers and not sharing components, the tire will affect each manufacturer differently. All cars will probably be faster, but when you are looking for hundredths or thousands of a second, any little difference matters.

The cars are all new next year and will have new suspension geometry as a result. Any setup that works this year will have little relevance to next year, and either way it’s not going to be anything they can’t figure out in the first few test days pre-season. As for your second point, that’s why there are three different manufacturers participating in the test. The data for all three will be available.

Alternatively, the cars will create more turbulent wake so passing could become more difficult.

I took the liberty of adding hi-res photos from f1fanatic.co.uk to your post so I wouldn’t have to create a new post!

Whoa. Apprently fat tires are the cure for basically everything.

Could start further in front. Those front wing elements just won’t stop multiplying, would they?
I guess an amalgamation of ‘02, ‘08, ‘12 and ‘17 rules would do the trick? At least pull down the wing by an inch or two.
Aw, goddammit, just go low-drag and point the exhaust tips to the diffuser. We could have gone full low-drag in ‘09 to ‘11.

That’s my worry. More tires and less aero could be fun, but more of everything doesn’t sound like it will fix anything.

Too bad the cars are still ugly.

but red bull, ferrari and mercedes know their own chassis. the other teams don’t.
i’m trying to think of an example in which this would be relevant, but maybe i’m just looking for an issue where there isn’t one.

but the other teams don’t know the intimate details of the three chassis, and they likely know little about the aero strategies (other than what’s common knowledge.) i mean, we, and they can guess...
also, i bet they are all paying, by way of fees to F1 and pirelli, who in turn pay the three teams for use of the cars.

I really don’t think it’s going to be an issue. They’re looking at load and life data on a 2016 car with some jury-rigged parts from earlier seasons attached to simulate the downforce of the 2017 cars. The 2017 cars are going to be different enough that I don’t think there will be much of an advantage. It’s not like Mercedes’ 2013 secret test. Pirelli are running these tests, not the teams. Also, these may not even be the tires used. This is the first test of the proposed construction and it will surely be tweaked between now and Australia.

I wonder how much of the 2017 car is done, Allison is gone but the 2017 car must be his. It’s too late to start a new car, they must have most of it laid out.
